The history of "Jadwiga"
Coker in inseparably connected with "Borsiga"
Mining and Steel Production Concern. The Concern was especially
prosperous during the time, when August Borsig's son,
Albert, ran the business. He participated in the extension
and modernisation of plants in Berlin and Biskupice. Mining
and steel manufacturing centre, consisting of two coalmines,
iron ore and flux mine and modern iron and steel mill
was established at that time.
The present "Jadwiga" Cokery
was established as the last plant within the Biskupice
facility in 1884. The Cokery was built near the 'Albert'
mineshaft, which used to supply it with coal. The plant
had two Coope type coke-oven batteries, each with 38 chambers.
Between the years 1897 - 1898 the company demolished obsolete
coke-oven batteries and replaced them with 2 "Otto
- Hoffman" type batteries, each consisting of 38
chambers and implemented many of the latest process solutions.
The compacting system was implemented at that time as
well.
In 1900 the company added another battery with 45 chambers
- battery III. Increasing demand from steel production
became the basis for the decision to build another "Otto
- Hoffman" system battery with 65 chambers in 1915.
The battery was handed over for operation at the same
time when the coal chemicals recovery plant and coke sorting
plant were modernised. Recovery of coal chemicals from
coke-oven gas increased profitability of the Cokery.
Major investment in the thirties included start-up of
modern 'Still' type coke-oven battery with 56 chambers.
At the time of start of operation of the 'Still' type
battery, batteries I, II and III were no longer in operation.
Battery IV was still operated but it was decommissioned
in the same year. Total daily charge in 'Still' battery
was not much lower than that on the other four batteries
all-together - 850 Mg.
In 1945, 91-year-old history of Biskupice Borsig concern
came to an end.
"Jadwiga" Cokery was reopened
on the 4th of December 1948 and operated as a one- battery
plant with annual production capacity of 264 thousand
Mg of coke. In December 1953 the company started operation
of another 28 chamber 'Otto' type coke-oven battery- the
sixth one in the history of the plant - with total daily
coke production capacity of 480 - 500 Mg. The battery
operated in the compacting operation system. In 1968 the
company decided to decommission the 56 chamber 'Still'
type coke-oven battery and replaced it with a 'Ja-65'
battery designed by 'Koksoprojekt' in 1969. The battery
is still in operation today.
On the 15th of January 1988, after 34 years of faultless
operation, the company decommissioned the 'Otto' type
coke-oven battery. Since then, 'Jadwiga' Cokery has been
operating as a single battery plant.
